30kph speed limits on way for Navan estates
New 30km speed limits are to be introduced in a number of housing estates in Navan, where the current limit is 50km per hour.
Ferndale, Balreask Village, Athlumney Abbey, The Orchards and Old Balreask Woods have been identified by Meath Co Council for an update of the speed limit.
Councillors and the public have also been asked to submit the names of other estates where this would be necessary. Meath Co Council Transportation Section has commenced a review of housing estates to be included in an update of the current 2017 Housing Estate Special Speed Limits.
The process of setting a Special Speed Limit is quite lengthy and detailed and requires engineering surveys and reviews, preparation of the draft bye-laws and maps, consultation with councillors, An Garda Síochána and the general public, review of submissions and voting in the bye law.
Cllr Eddie Fennessy welcomed the news.
"I've long campaigned for the installation of road safety measures on estates throughout Navan. Speed limits are a welcome measure that will make life safer for pedestrians and motorists alike.
"This initiative will provide a level of safety to children and elderly residents throughout the town. It is most welcome. I encourage local residents to take advantage of the public consultation process and request the roll out of speed limits on their estates.
He noted Balreask Village was one of the estates that will be included. "It has been a good week for the estate in terms of council announcements. €20,000 has also been approved for road repair and maintenance. Both initiatives will make life on the estate much better for pedestrians and motorists."
At last week's meeting of the Navan Municipal Council Cllr Francis Deane had asked when would the appropriate 30km speed limit signage be erected in Ferndale. He recalled that a traffic management report had been conducted on the estate.
He was told it was included in the draft list for discussion by Navan Municipal District members.
