Carberry sets the pace

Paul Carberry moved on to the 24 winner mark for the season at Limerick on Sunday (6th July). The Meath jockey is now 11 clear of defending champion Ruby Walsh in the race for the National Hunt title and is enjoying his best start to the season for some time. Carberry partnered Schelm to victory at the Munster track in a novice hurdle and won the race with a late surge. Carberry had the Ronald O"Leary-trained German bred gelding at the back of the field for most of the race, but the duo made progress into third place entering the straight. Carberry, who was the Meath Chronicle / Cusack Hotels Sports Personality-of-the-Month for February closed on leader before the last flight and forged ahead on the run-in. Globetrotting Johnny Murtagh moved to Hamburg in Germany this afternoon for a tilt at the BMW 139th Deutsches Derby on board the Aidan O"Brien-trained King Of Rome. However, on this occasion Murtagh was out of luck and came home in sixth place behind the local horse Kamsin which won well.
