Syddan secure first win
A goal from Cathal Dardis proved the crucial score as Syddan picked up their first win from three outings in the Corn na Boinne with a 1-10 to 0-11 win at Nobber.
The full-forward got on the end of a Shane Carpenter pass to finish to the net four minutes into the second-half to give his side a 1-8 to 0-6 lead. That advantage was enough to sustain Syddan until the final whistle, though their lead looked insecure in the closing stages.
Syddan were never headed at any stage in a match where both teams lost players to black cards and the winners had Cathal Duff dismissed on receipt of a second yellow card minutes from the finish.
Sean Clare, Ben Blakemore and Shane Carpenter all pointed for the visitors before Dale Larkin opened Nobber’s account on 15 minutes. The hosts levelled at 0-3 each but Syddan were always ahead following a Kevin Traynor point on 21 minutes.
Carpenter added two further points before the end of the half and 'keeper Myles Aver produced a fine stop to keep his goal intact as Syddan led 0-8 to 0-5 at half-time.
Patrick Clarke pointed when he should have found the net at the start of the second-half before Dardis’ goal gave Syddan a five-point cushion.
Blakemore’s third free and another point from play by Carpenter left it 1-10 to 0-9 after 44 minutes. Nobber had the bulk of the possession in the final quarter but relied too heavily on Larkin for scores.
