What's On the Box this week?

'Lemass: The Man Who Made Modern Ireland" (RTE 1, Tuesday) - In the late 1950s, the Republic was in a state of economic crisis as the country suffered from high unemployment and soaring emigration. The ideals of De Valera"s Ireland had become stagnant and a new vision for Ireland"s future was needed. In June 1959, Sean Lemass became Taoiseach and steered Ireland out of the despair of the 1950s, and into the modern age of the 1960s, a decade that saw the Republic experience economic development and great social change. Broadcast to mark the 50th anniversary of Sean Lemass becoming Taoiseach, this documentary explores two main themes in Lemass"s life: his journey as an Irish nationalist and his role in the transformation of Ireland"s economy from the 1930s through to the 1960s. The programme features interviews with relatives of Lemass, including grandsons Sean Haughey and Sean Lemass Jnr, TK Whitaker, Garret Fitzgerald, Sir Ken Bloomfield and Bertie Ahern. ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ 'Glastonbury" (BBC 2, Friday) - BBC Two begins its comprehensive coverage of Glastonbury, the UK"s largest music festival, concentrating on the headliners on the Pyramid Stage across the weekend. A packed programme features the best of the day"s performances across the three main stages - including Neil Young, the first of the headliners. Jo Whiley, Zane Lowe, Mark Radcliffe and Lauren Laverne are the hosts for the whole weekend and will bring viewers highlights and performances from artists across the three main stages, plus acoustic sets and highlights of the action from elsewhere on site. ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ 'Daily Cooks Challenge" (ITV, Monday) - It"s the battle of the hobs in this new series of 'Daily Cooks Challenge", hosted by Antony Worrall Thompson. Each week, two top chefs battle it out across a week in a series of daily challenges to win the heart, mind and taste buds of a different celebrity guest judge each day. The chefs" skills, experience and creativity will be pushed to the limits as they compete to complete three challenges that every cook at home faces regularly - cooking against the clock, cooking within a budget and trying to create an impressive meal with set ingredients. Every day Worrall Thompson will be giving the celebrity guest a cookery masterclass, which could be anything from showing them how to cook their favourite dish, explaining why their soufflé sinks or teaching a few crafty tricks of the trade. ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ 'Outbreak" (RTE 1, Tuesday) - Two fathers, Brendan Prendergast from Dublin and Dumitru Pop from Romania, describe how their lives were changed forever when their daughters contracted measles - sometimes regarded as an innocuous childhood disease, but which can be a dormant killer. For hundreds of years the measles virus was viewed as a common childhood illness whereas, in reality, many young lives were lost each year to it. In the 1980s a vaccine was finally made available to children in Ireland, but for some, it came too late. ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ Movie Of The Week: 'Something"s Gotta Give" (RTE 1, Wednesday) - Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton make a persuasive case for older love in this snappy comedy set in the Hamptons and New York. Keanu Reeves and Amanda Peet play support, but the film belongs to the leads and some wise and funny aspects of the romance game after 60.
