The late Kevin Mallon.

Sadness at death of teacher and GAA broadcaster, Kevin Mallon

His former students and colleagues at St Patrick's Classical School in Navan and sports fans across Meath were saddened at the weekend to learn of the untimely death of Kevin Mallon, former teacher and LMFM broadcaster.

He died peacefully at his Castleknock, Dublin home on Saturday evening, after a short illness.

Kevin was born in Co Down and his family moved to Ballinlough in Meath in 1964 where his father ony ran the local public house for a few years before another move was made, to Ashbourne.

Kevin played club football with Ballinlough, Oldcastle and Donaghmore and was the goalkeeper for the Meath minors in 1973.

When local radio stations were given the green light in 1989, Kevin became LMFM's chief Gaelic football commentator for Meath. He made his All-Ireland senior final debut the following year when big rivals at the time, Cork, were the Royals' opponents.

In the nineties the Irish Examiner carried a feature on GAA commentators with local radio stations and Kevin Mallon was placed as the number one in the list of the best. He had a keen interest in the history of the association and ran a website entitled 'The GAA Then and Now' for a few years.

Kevin Mallon taught English at St Patrick's CS for 39 years, retiring in 2017, and principal, Colm O'Rourke today remembered him as a “wonderful teacher and colleague”. Many past pupils have been paying tribute.

Kevin is survived by his wife, Patricia, son Kilian, daughter Megan, son-in-law Lee, daughter-in-law Utsavi, sisters Geraldine Murphy and Patricia Brady (New York), brother Martin, (parents Anthony (Tony) and Rosella Mallon, predeceased), sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, & wide circle of friends.

He is reposing at home, Bramley Heath, Castleknock, on Tuesday from 4pm until 7pm.
