Council to host Civic Reception for Meath Ladies

Fresh from being crowned the Meath Chronicle Team of the Year for the second year in succession and with Vikki Wall winning the Sports Person of the Year at the annual awards in Knightsbrook Hotel last Friday, Meath County Council will honour the All-Ireland winning Meath senior ladies football team with a civic reception at the Solstice Theatre in Navan on Thursday evening.

The Cathaoirleach of Meath Co Council, Sean Drew told those at the Meath Chronicle Sports awards on Friday night that he was delighted to be hosting a civic reception for the Meath Ladies on Thursday, following on from the reception held for the all-Ireland winning Meath minors last November.

In his short speech before revealing Vikki Wall as the Meath Chronicle Sports Person of the Year, an award sponsored by Meath County Council, Drew talked about the importance of sport and how it had carried us through the pandemic.

He believed sport helped to sustain spirits, that it had provided a distraction from the incessant bleak news we were hearing day after weary day and he how believed those who sought excellence in sport were genuine heroes - and heroines.

Drew commended those people who did so much to sustain the nation and the county when some kind of sustenance was badly needed. He particularly commended the sporting stars of the Royal County many of whom were in attendance at the Knightsbrook Hotel on Friday for the Meath Chronicle Sports Awards.

East Meath Fianna Fáil Councillor, Stephen McKee, is also looking forward to the civic reception to honour the Meath Ladies senior football team.

"This Civic Reception has been organised on foot of a motion that I successfully tabled at last July’s full Council meeting to recognise the achievements of the Meath senior ladies GAA team," he said.

"Due to Covid restrictions and lockdowns, it has been unfortunate that the team did not receive the full recognition they deserved up to now. I am pleased that the players and management team will now get that recognition from the county.

"There is no doubt that all the players and management team deserve this formal civic reception as they have all done the county proud.”
