Oldcastle army officer receives comission in special ceremony
Lieutenant Èamonn Fitzsimons from Oldcastle was one of 24 Army and Air Corps personnel who received their commission from the President Michael D Higgins, presented by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade and Defence, Simon Coveney, in Collins Baracks, Dublin, earlier this month.
The event was significant as it has been 100 years since the barracks has been handed back to the Irish Free State from the British crown forces.
Since the foundation of the State just over 200 permanent Defence Forces officers have gained their commission in this manner as this was only the 11th course of its type, unlike cadets that may join as school leavers or new college graduates. This shows the opportunities that are available to all and especially to those thinking of the Defence Forces as a career.
Dromone man Èamonn Fitzsimons has 20 years service in the Defence Forces as a sergeant and has served in both the Middle East and Africa for extended durations representing the Irish State on United Nation missions. He is also heavily involved in GAA club scene in both Meath and Westmeath where he uses his skills to develop and enhance teams. Lieutenant Fitzsimons now takes up his role in training and development in the Defence Forces Training Centre.
