De Zerbi has 'no doubt' as Ferguson strikes again
Brighton manager reminds all Meath youngster is still learning
Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi says he has "no doubt" Evan Ferguson has what it takes to continue to make an impact in top-class football after the Bettystown youngster scored again for his team last night.
Ferguson found the net again for the Seagulls in their 1-0 win over Stoke City in the first-half to secure a place for his team in the quarter-final of the age-old competition.
The Republic of Ireland international, 18, swooped to finish a fine move on the half-hour mark to register another goal for the Seagulls. Since scoring his first Premier League goal against Arsenal on New Year's Eve Ferguson has gone on to find the net against a number of teams including Everton and Leicester City.
Now he has scored in the FA Cup with his finish against Stoke underlining once again the young Irish international's ability to finish off chances.
The downside of football was however brought home to Ferguson when he was the victim of a heavy tackle by Liverpool's Fabinho a few weeks ago but he has now clearly bounced back fully from that.
Afterward the win over Stoke City, De Zerbi spoke of Ferguson's qualities such as his scoring ability and drive but also suggesting the young Meathman has still work to do to fulfil his true potential.
"He is unique for us in terms of quality, in terms of characteristic. He knows very well the way to score," said De Zerbi.
"I think he can and he has to improve, in the quality of play, in ball possession, to keep the ball better.
"But he is 18 and he will improve for sure, because I know the guy, I know his passion, his attitude, and I have no doubt."
Substitute Danny Welbeck hit the post in stoppage-time as the visitors claimed a last-eight spot for the third time in six seasons.
Ferguson's return to scoring form is good news for Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny as he prepares for forthcoming internationals against Latvia (22nd March) and France (27th March).
