After extra-time

Victory was secured by Navan in this Anderson Cup semi-final on Sunday but in a most unusual way.

With the teams tied at the end of extra-time Navan were declared winners by dint of the fact that they were shown a lower number of yellow cards than their rivals.

Navan now go on to play Tullamore in the final.

Navan - Francis Hoey, Odhran Begley, Harry Devlin, Thomas Geraghty, Simon Hogan, Jack Dixon, Maurice McAuley; Craig Byrne, Paul Caffrey, David McAteer, Shane O'Connor, Damien Dixon, Stuart Byrne, Colm Wall, Anton Hoey. Subs - Martin Kearns, Evan James, Seamus McAteer, Bernard Smyth, Simon Kelly.

U-16 Girls challenge match

Navan 38 Ashbourne/Balbriggan 21

(Friday 28th April)

(Report by head coach John Molloy)

What a way to finish up our season. As the ad says " If Carlsberg did matches......". Friday night under lights on pitch one, a comprehensive win against a team two divisions above us and pizza to finish off the evening was the way to go!

Ashbourne/Balbriggan are a strong, well established team but couldn't match the energy from Navan. The game barely started when Ella O'Higgins sliced through them and dotted down under the posts. The first of her hat trick of tries.

Not to be outdone, Sadhbh Casserly weaved her way in from outside the 22. The ever improving Ellen Hogan scored the next try. Not to be outdone by the backs, Caitlin Ratty smashed her way through for our sixth try. Aoife White converted four out of six to complete our score.

Ashbourne/Balbriggan fought back with three tries of their own and almost a fourth, only to be driven into touch two meters from the line by Ciara Byrne.

Ella O'Higgins is our Star of the Match, for her three tries and match management as Out-Half. Emma Hyland deserves a mention as well, giving 120% as usual, tackling and rucking.

Congratulations to Ella, Sadhbh and Aoife on getting selected for the u16 Leinster 7s squad and joining Molly Murphy, Kellie Behan and Katie Kearney on the u18 Leinster Northeast squad.

Over the season, leadership from our six senior players; Katie Kearney, Ella, Aoife, Caitlin, Sadhbh and Emma helped the younger & new girls settle in and gel as a squad.

It was quite a struggle in the first half of the season, regularly shipping 50 point defeats, but the group showed real character and after Christmas we started turning up and competing with the best of them.

I am looking forward to seeing these players at teen tag during the Summer and also playing for our under 16 and 18 teams next season.
