Cumann na mBunscol Finals: Mary’s best in this battle of the Saints

For a brief spell in the opening minutes of this Camogie Shield final St Oliver Plunkett NS were in front. Then St Mary's started find their feet and chalk up the scores and march to a victory that was as deserved as it was comprehensive at Trim on Friday.

It wasn't that the St Oliver Plunkett players played badly. They didn't. They battled and worked showing all the qualities, the many admirable qualities, that carried them to the final. They just found a St Mary's side, who led 1-4 to 0-2 at the break, in unstoppable form. A St Mary's side that was inspired by some wonderful play from a variety of players.

Right up there in the high performance unit was Leanagh Treacy who helped herself to stupendous, memorable 1-8. She gave an exhibition of striking and scoring that was impressive indeed. Her goal was scored in the second-half, the end product of a powerful drive hit with purpose.

Shauna Ivers was another superb performer for the winners, her top-notch display capped by 1-2. Katie Ryan also sweep home a fine point for St Mary's who scored their last goal through goalkeeper Aoibheann Doyle who switched to full-forward.

St Oliver Plunkett NS had their share of heroes. There was netminder Liadh Clynch who used her feet and eagled-eyed agility to make a sting of super saves from Treacy, twice, as well as Ryan. Treacy also had an effort rebound off the post.

Anna O'Rourke was a brave captain for St Oliver Plunkett NS. She sought to lead by example, slotting over three points (two frees), with her first score the game's opening strike.

St Oliver Plunkett players defended tenaciously but they just couldn't contain the lively St Mary's PS side. It must have been like trying to hold back the tide. The players in light blue did their school proud but St Mary's were worthy winners. No doubt.
