Men’s Shed working on sensory garden for adults with disabilities at Claremont Stadium

Men's Shed Navan have been developing a new project with Prosper Meath and Claremont Stadium to construct a sensory garden.

When completed the garden which will be located in Claremont Stadium, will provide day activities for adults with disabilities.

It will allow them to connect to nature while becoming more aware of their surroundings.

The garden will feature four free-standing wheelchair accessible planters, making it an inviting environment to all.

Prosper Meath service users as well as other surrounding disability services will be involved in the upkeep of the garden. In the winter they will plant vegetables and during the summer, plant flowers.

Construction began on Saturday, 26th August with some blockwork completed by Sean Murphy from SLM Brickwork and his staff, Sean Fitzsimons and Andy Murphy.

Volunteers Ollie, Christy, Tiernan and Gordon as well as the local Shed members are also involved in the project.

Roy McKeown will be coming to plaster the flower beds and the Prosper Meath service users will assist in painting the flower beds.

Mayor of Navan Cllr Eddie Fennessy who is also secretary of Men's Shed Navan said: "The Men's Shed are delighted to be part of such a worthwhile project which is a collaboration with Prosper Meath and Claremont Stadium.

“We've also had help from locals who volunteered their services. I'd like to thank Sean Murphy and his staff at SLM Brickwork for their support. They did a great job building the raised beds and the wheelchair accessible planters.

"When completed, the sensory garden will provide day activities for the Prosper Meath service users who will plant and maintain it. The benefit of having such a facility in Navan will be of huge benefit to them. We thank everyone who helped so far and will do into the future."

Men's Shed Navan is a voluntary group based on the Claremont Stadium campus in Navan.

With a diverse range of people with different talents it allows men to come together to learn, share skills and make long-lasting friendships.

They are always looking for new volunteers to join their group and invite any interested to attend their meetings on Fridays between 2-4pm at Claremont Stadium.
