Seneschalstown Mothers & Others head for the Big Apple

Laura Burke

A forty-woman strong team are due to travel from Seneschalstown to New York City to take part in a New York Ladies Gaelic for Mothers and Others Blitz in November.

The Seneschalstown ladies are believed to be the first Meath M&O team to have ever been across the water to NYC to play in Gaelic Park. The 40 ladies will take the 5, 065 km journey in November with the support of their club, family and friends.

This team was set up back in April 2022 when seventy ladies from across the parish joined together in what has been a fun filled year.

Some of these ladies, never having played football before, decided to take on a new hobby.

Throughout the year, they have played against local teams and some from further afield in a non-competitive, inclusive and fun environment. They have played in a Leinster blitz, a national blitz and soon will take on teams from across America in the NYC blitz in Gaelic Park.

Mothers & Others is a Ladies Gaelic Football (LGFA) initiative for women aged 25 and over, who are not currently playing competitive Gaelic Football. This initiative has exploded in the Seneschalstown community with woman of all ages and backgrounds getting involved.

As much as it is about learning a new skill set, for some it is a social outing. It is a way of meeting new people from the community. The initiative has brought the Seneschalstown ladies from Kentstown/Beauparc to the heart of the GAA in America, Gaelic Park.

Manager and coach Cathy-Anne Cowley added: "It has been an honour to watch these ladies skills develop. And even more of an honour to watch the friendships and comradery that the team has developed."

It's sure to be an unforgettable trip for the ladies from Seneschalstown.

Having fun.
